I Might Be Weird

Well, I'm back from visiting my sister and boy did I miss blogging! There are so many things to write about but I'm going to start with the dumbest. While I was there, I discovered something...I might be weird. I really think of myself as a pretty normal person but those late night girl talks after dealing with three high maintenance screaming little girls revealed some weird things about me. I've kept them mostly to myself but it's time to come clean...mostly out of a desire to find out if you might be weird too. Here it is.

DREAMS

I dream all through the night and I almost always remember my dreams. Sometimes I wake up tired because I felt like I didn't sleep at all. When I have nightmares, I always wake up on my back and have to actually turn on my side to be able to go back to sleep without continuing to have bad dreams. My most common bad dream is that I am driving a car at night on a windy road and the headlights keep going out. I can't see where I'm going and I can't stop the car. One of my favorite dreams is flying. This is not so weird, however, my other favorite dream is where I am stretching and I'm super flexible. In my dreams I can sometimes look in a mirror and decide I want my hair to be longer, my body to be thinner, I want to wear something different, etc. and make the change happen immediately. Just imagine what I can do! I have discovered that the often circulated idea that if you dream you're falling and you land, you will die is not true. I dreamt once that I fell off a building and then hit the sidewalk. In my dream it didn't hurt, I just couldn't move and I felt like I was pancake thin. And obviously I didn't die but maybe it did make me weird.

FOOD
I love to eat something dry and salty that really makes you thirsty and then having something cold and refreshing to drink. Just to do it. Somehow creating that desperate thirst and then satisfying it feels so good. I also like drinking water with no ice. That way I'm able to drink more of it and I don't get that brain freeze. I always eat peanut butter on my waffles. No butter, just peanut butter and then once the peanut butter gets all melty I put the syrup on. YUM! I like dipping my pizza in mustard but only when it's frozen or homemade. Somehow, when it's delivery (not DiGiorno), it's good enough on it's own.

THE REALLY WEIRD
I constantly trace things with my eyes. When I'm driving or riding in a car I am constantly tracing signs, the back window of the car in front of me, the billboards. All lines. When I watch TV I'm totally tuned into the program but I'm always tracing the letters of any words that appear on the screen, collars on shirts, jawlines, hairlines, everything. It's always best when it's something symmetrical. And it's always best if I can trace something in one continuous line. Again, I'm not thinking about it really while I'm doing it, it's just sort of something going on in the background all the time. When it occurs to me that I'm doing it I get really irritated and try to stop but before I know it, I'm doing it again. Does this mean I'm cuckoo? Maybe it means I'm a genius! No, probably cuckoo. I just discovered on this last long road trip that when I am actively listening to music, like singing along, I don't trace things.

So now that you're a little scared I have to ask. Am I weird or does anyone else do these things? What secret weirdness are you hiding? And don't feel bad, hey, maybe weird is the new normal.

OK, Dreams - I dream very strange too and always remember. Last night I remember I was doing something for Jason at church and had to find Ashton Kutcher to help with something. Mine are so weird I can't remember them after long term. Jason would agree. But, being able to change things consciously like your hair or outfit must be a special talent.

LOVE peanut butter on my waffles - love it! I drink no ice water all the time, but not so sure about the mustard. That might be strange.

I couldn't even understand that last paragraph though! Like trace them with your eyes - like your eyes go around and around or with your finger? Interesting. My weird unconscious movement is playing songs on my imaginary French horn. I played for 5 years, and still remember one song (Joy to the World) and will do the movements. Weird I know. That's funny to think about - who knows all the things like that people do. It'll be interesting to read what people say...

Glad you had a fun trip - missed you!!!

Let me clarify the tracing. I'm not doing it with my finger or anything. No one would ever know. I'm just drawing with my eyes. Sometimes at church if there's some really crazy background with lots of patterns and shapes, my husband will lean over and say, "That background is making you crazy isn't it?" And sure enough I'm tracing it over and over in my mind. I'm not really thinking about it though, like someone who twirls their hair or bites their nails. Does that make sense? Well, wait, I know it doesn't make sense but anyway...

By the way Sarah, I love the French horn thing. That makes me feel slightly more normal. Missed you all too!

I don't dream much anymore but when I was younger, boy did I ever dream. I had 2 dreams that I was constantly having. One was falling from the sky in a circle pattern with arms and legs spread out. I always woke up before I hit the ground. Maybe that's one reason I hate to fly. The other was that I was always in my underwear in class. Maybe this was because I was really shy when I was in school. You have some pretty entertaining dreams I must say.

I like to put jelly on my waffles. It's good but maybe too I feel like jelly is not as fattening as butter and syrup. Sometimes I will get wild and spread on butter with the jelly.

That tracing thing with your eyes is really interesting. Now whenever I see you, I may be really watching your eyes to see if they're tracing. You know, phillip may do that too. Sometimes his eyes are moving like they are tracing. Mmmmm.

Phillip thinks this is weird for me to do. Whenever I go to his ballgames, I park in the same spot, I walk through the same gate giving my ticket to the same man. I sit in the same seat every game. I go get food and there are 3 lines. I stand in the same line, always, no matter if it's the longest line or not. I get served by the same server. When I leave, I leave out the same gate every night(different than the one I entered through).

When I check out at the grocery, I like to unload the heaviest items first. Whenever a grocery worker starts helping me unload and just puts whatever on the conveyer belt, I get ticked. This person has messed up my method. I am nice and thank them for their help but don't really appreciate it.

I eat one thing at a time on my plate. If I have meat, potatoes, peas, I'll eat all the peas first then go to the potatoes then all of the meat. I usually don't drink anything(or not much) until I'm done eating.

Gosh, I could write a book on weirdness. Glad you're back, Tracy. Let us know how Jeff's trip went. Hugs to all.

Very entertaining. Love PB on waffles, but don't get to do it much since it's pretty much banned from our house. I have to sneak it without Jason seeing it so he doesn't freak out. I dream all the time, but often only remember really odd parts of it that end up all scrambling themselves together into some morphed-up (similar to jacked up) crazy dream.

I still often type out words in my head. I'll hear something on TV or see it on a sign and type it with my fingers in my head. Sometimes I notice my fingers really are moving.

Along a different line, but still kind of weird...I sometimes just want to stand up and scream in a quiet place. I think about that often when it's really quiet at church- especially if I'm at a different church and one that's really formal...or even at a wedding or funeral. I picture myself standing up and just yelling something. I can even feel myself get nervous in my seat...I hope I never really do that!

I enjoyed reading this Tracy and everyone's comments too. You know I think there is no "normal." Or maybe that's what I tell myself so I don't feel so abnormal.
I dream constantly too. In every dream I have, there will always be a person that I saw during the day- not someone I know- just someone I might have passed at Kroger or saw while sitting in my car at a red light- and in my dream I remember that I saw them that day some where.

I dip my fries in mustard instead of ketchup. Sometimes I put it on my toast- Jim, my husband thinks this is really gross.

I count. I'm hesitant to share this Lol! :) If you've had any kind of psych class its a common symptom- although not on its own- of certain types of schizophrenia. Or could be OCD too. Anyway, I'll just lay my old crazy self out for you.:) I count stairs when I walk up them. I count the little lines on digital clocks that make up the numbers. I count tiles, sidewalk squares, etc. I'll stop there before you get really worried about me. ha!
This was a fun post!

Susan, my son counts steps too. He informed me of this not long ago. He told me he just HAS to count the steps. I was just like, "Okay."

Susan - my mom does the counting thing too. I actually think it's probably very similar to my tracing thing. By the way, I don't think the counting thing is nearly as weird as mustard on toast. :) I do like to dip my fries in mustard.

I completely understand the eat something salty and dry to make you thirsty scenario. I often make a tall glass of ice water before I begin to cut the grass. I then force myself to delay the thirst quenching gratification until the end of the yard job so that the ice has enough time to melt and cause the water to be extra cold. Ahhh...refreshing!

This is Julie. You know how weird I am. I count stairs and steps when I'm walking anywhere (but I do have OCD). Actually, most of what I do is probably caused by the OCD: from the time I was a little girl I ate one thing at a time until my mom got really sick; now I don't do it any more. I don't know what one had to do with the other, but it did. I also type words in my head (like Ashley). I especially do it when I'm trying to fall asleep. I often type song lyrics. Speaking of song lyrics: when I'm driving and listening to the radio, I sign (as in sign language) the first letter of each word in the lyrics. I never step on cracks in a sidewalk (bricks are muder! Luckily I have small feet...) I also have weird dreams that I remember. Recently I dreamed I was an angel, but no one could see what I really looked like; they only saw me in human form. There were actually a couple of us, but I don't know who the other people were. I was new at it, but one of the other people--a girl--was telling me how heavy the wings are and how your back gets really tired of carrying them. But even though I was an angel, I kept saying really mean things to people. ??? It was like we were in high school in the cafeteria and my table (the angels) kept arguing with people at other tables. I don't know, I guess I'm WEIRD!

I count stuff too. Steps especially. I dream all the time. And I can wake up mad at Rick or frustrated or exhausted. Whenever I have a major event coming up (work related - like Christmas Village or Paper Peddler) or like something big with MOPS, I have a dream about being back in college. The campus is always different but I am always looking for a class that I cannot find. Usually it is the end of the semester and I have to get there to take an exam, but can't find it. And I get all freaked out.

My other weird thing is that, you know how you see spots or (I can't think of the word), but anyway. . . I see a crooked dollar sign in my right eye. . . It's like a floating thing. I remember the first time I ever noticed it, I was like 8 or 9 at the KC swimming pool in Donelson. Ever since then I have thought that the dollar sign was a "sign" that I would have money one day. The shape changes sometimes and it is more crooked, but always a dollar sign. HA! But at this stage in life I am beginning to think that the "sign" was just to tell me that I would NOT have money AT ALL in life. :) So, why is it still there???

Oh, and I have NEVER put peanut butter on waffles. Hmmmm. . .

Hey Tracy. I am loving all of these "weird" comments. I have wanted to comment but was unsure if I was too weird, but Julie made me feel okay about it! :) I am self-diagnosed OCD. I count everything and EVERYTHING has to come out even. I eat any candy in two's and if there is one left, it goes in the trash. Like Julie, I would NEVER step on the cracks in the sidewalks! I fold my straw wrapper in half, then again, and so on until it is perfectly folded, my dinner napkin too. In college, I had to get two steps in on each square of sidewalk, but that got too tiring at UT!! I gave that up. All cabinet and closet doors have to be closed always... Ok, enough for now. I'm probably scaring you. I get it honest, my dad is psycho like me! Rachel

Amy Lafayett said...

Okay. I am laughing about Rachel's comment on two steps in every square while walking. I do that sometimes. Not always, but enough to think I am weird.

Rachel--I am totally with you girl! Power to the OCD people! Jul

I can't tell you how comforting/scary it is how many weird things we all do. How intriguing that the most comments I've ever had on a post is about how weird I am.
